An Island for Everyone's Taste

Chris Sherman | 8/1/2008

Among the hundreds of islands, one has your dream on it.

Foodies: Anguilla blends fruit and fish, exotic spice and white-toque technique at CuisinArt. Oui, the French cookware maker has built a food-forward resort with organic gardens, wine tastings and hands-on classes. Plus fine dining all along the island.

Divers: Go shallow, go deep, skim reef or wreck off Statia. Sint Eustatius is as warm and friendly as its calypso and West Indian cooking.

Explorers: Hike jungle trails, walk the beach, spot rare birds and sleep in tents on St. John, an island that’s over half national park. You must go by boat: The most lush of U.S. Virgins has no airport.

Fashionistas: Head to Tortuga Bay at Punta Cana on the Dominican Republic for R&R cover-girl style. Designer Oscar de la Renta dressed this resort in his native country in his classic elegance. The neighbors? Julio Iglesias and Mikhail Baryshnikov.

Not you yet? Try the water on St. Lucia, home to two laureates, writer Derek Walcott and economist Arthur Lewis, and two massive volcanic peaks. Great hiking, diving, villaging, Creole cooking and an annual jazz fest are easy no-brainers.
