Retired Marine Corps Gen. William L. "Spider'' Nyland has joined the Florida Institute of Human and Machine Cognition in Pensacola as deputy director for defense research and development. Nyland was assistant commandant of the Marine Corps. Also at FIHMC: Lt. Col. Sharon Heise has been named an associate director and researcher. Heise was director of mathematics and information sciences at the Air Force's Office of Scientific Research; and Randy Williams, formerly president of the Sacred Heart Health System Foundation, was named director of development. ? The French government named Alec Hargreaves, director of FSU's Winthrop-King Institute for Contemporary French and Francophone Studies, a Knight of the Legion of Honor, its top national order, "for strengthening cultural ties."
