A Show of Appreciation

David Denor | 11/26/2019

FLORIDA TREND has always had a strong commitment to covering education — and I could not be prouder of our editorial team for the reporting they put together for this issue.

Each year in our December edition, we reveal our Floridian of the Year. This year’s selection — Florida’s K-12 teachers — could not be more appropriate. Some might argue that teachers deserve the honor year in and year out — and I would be hard-pressed to disagree, although I am a bit biased as my wife, Jessica, is a third-grade teacher.

As you’ll read in our Floridian of the Year feature, Florida students in the past 12 months ranked first in the nation in participation in Advanced Placement exams and fourth nationally in student achievement (according to Education Week’s Quarterly Counts). Florida’s high school graduation rate hit a 15-year high at 86%. And 63% of Florida schools have earned an A or B.

Take a look at the feature. You’ll want to read all of the teacher profiles.

You’ll also want to check out the Economic Backbone section focusing on health care, specifically hospitals. The feature includes articles on high-tech medical command centers at some of the state’s top hospitals; a look at how we are working to close the gap in diabetes care; blood tests to detect brain injuries; construction and growth of health care centers around the state; and much more.

FLORIDA TREND has had an amazing 2019. Our writers have covered everything from artificial intelligence and cyber-security to the latest in space and aerospace. We reported on MBA graduates a year after graduation. We’ve covered all aspects of health care — from cancer and cardiac care to biomedical research. Our editorial team looked at the state’s top litigators and some of the most important decisions to come out of the Florida Supreme Court. We highlighted Florida’s largest women-owned businesses and told the stories of their influential and inspirational leaders. We continued to report on all the exciting innovations at our colleges and universities. We recognized 500 of the state’s most influential business leaders. We looked at the state’s growing transportation and infrastructure challenges and how green development and sustainability issues will play a crucial role in future development. We continued to pay close attention to Florida’s growing water issues and the solutions that need to be addressed.

In the year ahead, we will continue to provide you with the depth and breadth of coverage you’ve come to expect from FLORIDA TREND.

I want to thank all of our supporters. From all of us here at Florida Trend, happy holidays and all the best in 2020.
