In Florida, COVID uptick is leading to more disruptions at home, work and school
Coronavirus cases are once again on the rise in Florida. But schools and employers have fewer tools to slow the spread of COVID-19. The increase in cases is leading to more hospitalizations and more disruptions at home, work and school. With many employers still grappling with staff shortages, even modest increases in workers calling in sick can be a burden, with schools, stores and restaurants struggling to cover shifts. 'What they have to say matters': UNF launches new empowerment program for women business students
Last year four local companies — CSX Corp., Truist Financial Corp., staffing provider Adecco and gastroenterology provider Borland Groover — approached UNF for help getting more women in business leadership positions, according to Women in Business director Leslie Gordon, who teaches marketing and other related courses and recently completed a doctorate in education leadership. First annual North Miami Beach Small Business Expo to be held
This event — which organizers say is the largest expo for businesses within the city — offers businesses of all sizes the opportunity to showcase their specialty and target their customers. It will feature more than 100 of North Miami Beach’s best businesses and attract more than 2,5000 attendees. Plans are for it to be held every year in May. More from the Miami Herald .
Everyone’s moving to Tampa Bay and Central Florida, PODS says
New data from Clearwater-based moving and storage company PODS suggests people are moving to Central Florida in droves. The company recently analyzed data from nearly half a million moves during 2021 and early 2022, and determined that the No. 1 destination for PODS customers, in terms of more people moving in than out, was the Sarasota area. Tampa Bay came in at No. 4, Ocala at No. 5 and Orlando at No. 9. More from the Tampa Bay Times.
Spirt Airlines rejects JetBlue buyout bid, citing antitrust concerns
South Florida-based discount carrier Spirit Airlines announced Monday it has rejected a $3.3 billion buyout bid by JetBlue Airways, saying its suitor failed to sufficiently address antitrust concerns. Spirit said its board of directors decided to proceed with a previous offer by Frontier Airlines of Denver, a deal it hopes to close during the second half of this year. Historic 2022 U.S. Open Polo Championship caps season with record attendance
The 2022 U.S. Open Polo Championship has closed out its season in Wellington, the “Winter Equestrian Capital of the World”, with record attendance at the International Polo Club and watched by millions more viewers on ESPN. The United States Polo Association (USPA), celebrated the 118th U.S. Open, the last game of the season in the United States, with an eye on an even more globally-significant event for the sport this fall when the XII Federation of International Polo (FIP) World Polo Championship is held in Wellington, Oct. 26-Nov. 6.

Brightline just got a health and safety award, and it’s a first for a train company
Brightline, the high-speed passenger train in South Florida, became the first rail company in the world to receive the WELL Health-Safety Rating, an internationally recognized award that highlights an organization’s efforts to customer well-being. The safety rating for facility operations and management, awarded by the International WELL Building Institute, has been given to several recognizable brands, businesses and locations in South Florida and beyond, including the FLA Live Arena in Sunrise, the Cleveland Cavaliers, Hilton and T-Mobile.
