Golisano Children's Health Center opens a virtual reality chemotherapy room

Amy Keller | 8/31/2022

Over the years, numerous studies have shown that distractions and relaxation techniques can significantly alleviate some of the negative effects of chemotherapy, such as nausea, pain and anxiety. With that in mind, Lee Health’s Golisano Children’s Health Center in Naples has opened an immersive virtual reality chemotherapy room, where children can explore a shipwreck, chill on the beach or journey through space as they receive their cancer treatment — or, if they prefer, stream a movie or play a video game. D3 Creative Studio, a graphic design firm in Babcock Ranch that specializes in 3-D visualization, helped to design the space, transforming the treatment room into other places via 270-degree projection mapping technology and surround sound. Patients control their experience through an iPad and video game controller.
