Ensuring a Bright Future

David Denor | 8/1/2022

Every issue of FLORIDA TREND has special meaning and purpose. You will always find stories to grab your attention and challenge your thinking. I find myself constantly applying what I’ve learned and read in Trend to my work and personal life.

Our August issue hits all the right notes for me: Our Economic Backbone section, which starts on page 14, focuses on pediatric health care — with articles highlighting the growth and development taking place across our state’s amazing children’s hospitals and other pediatric institutions. The incredible work that physicians and caregivers do and the impact they have on our most precious patients is inspiring. This section strikes a personal chord for me — our daughter, who graduated with her first bachelor’s degree in public health last spring, will graduate with a second bachelor’s degree in nursing this December. Her concentration is in pediatric surgery. She will be excited to read the Backbone features this month.

I also want to turn your attention to another health care report in this issue: Reporter Amy Keller’s story on how artificial intelligence is changing patient care (page 58). Researchers at the University of Florida have developed a promising tool using AI that helps doctors better forecast how patients might respond to surgery and other treatments — all designed to produce better outcomes.

I am sure many of you, like me, have made some home improvements over these past few years. While we have to jump through regulatory hoops now and then to get the job completed, it’s nothing compared to what residents of Palm Beach have to go through. The Palm Beach Architectural Commission (ARCOM) must sign off on home construction and remodeling. And getting by this commission is no easy task — no matter how famous or rich you are. Mike Vogel’s story on page 50, “Difficult by Design,” gives you an inside look at the tradeoffs that come with keeping Florida’s most rarefied community that way.

This month’s issue also features our annual Best Companies to Work For in Florida feature (page 76). Find out how some of the state’s top companies are dealing with the Great Resignation and the tight labor market. Amy Keller talked with some of the winning companies about their ability to attract and keep top talent.

The vibrancy of a region helps drive tourism and business growth. In this issue, you can read about how St. Petersburg is becoming one of Florida’s most popular cities to work, live and play in and what officials are doing to attract relocations. Starting on page 100, Nancy Dahlberg highlights the city’s many attributes. You won’t want to miss this report.

St. Petersburg’s story is common across Florida. The state has become a magnet for businesses in all industries.

As Floridians, we are fortunate to live, work and play where we do. It is our responsibility to continue the positive advancements so that future generations can enjoy all that Florida has to offer.
