Southwest Florida to Get Job Training Aid
Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday directed $7.7 million of state and federal money toward skilled-labor training in Southwest Florida, as the region recovers from Hurricane Ian.
“We want to make sure that we're doing things to make sure we have everything in place so that we can see a boom in the future,” DeSantis said during an appearance Wednesday in the Lee County community of Matlacha. “And one of the things that means is, making sure we have people with the right training to be able to fill key positions in our workforce and in our economy.”
The move will provide $2.94 million to the State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota to expand commercial driver’s license and logistic programs.
Another $1.98 million will go to Florida SouthWestern State College in Fort Myers to expand training in information technology.
South Florida State College in Highlands County will receive $618,842 for commercial driver’s license and welding programs.
Fort Myers Technical College will receive $973,000 to expand programs in diesel maintenance and machine manufacturing.
Cape Coral Technical College will get $200,000 to expand its nursing program.
The final $1 million will go to CareerSource Suncoast, CareerSource Heartland, and CareerSource Southwest Florida.
The money will come from the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act grant program and the state’s Job Growth Grant Fund.
