Jobless claims dip in Florida

First-time unemployment claims dipped last week in Florida, with the average weekly total remaining below 6,000 claims. The U.S. Department of Labor on Thursday issued a report that estimated 4,881 new unemployment claims were filed last week in the state, down from a revised count of 5,535 during the week that ended April 15. Over the past four weeks, the state has averaged 5,448 claims. More from the News Service of Florida.

'Critical' to check property insurance now as hurricane season nears, expert says

As Florida approaches the start of hurricane season on June 1, insurance experts said there are some things homeowners should be checking. "It's critical to check on that property insurance right now," Robert Norberg of Arden Insurance in Lantana said. He said the first thing to check is the deductibles on your policy. "Don't be surprised when you see that high hurricane deductible when the claim time comes," Norberg said. More from WPTV.

The cruise industry in Florida is expected to see record numbers in 2023 after it essentially came to a screeching halt during the pandemic. Port officials call Florida the cruise capital of the world. They say they’re seeing a lot of pent-up demand from the pandemic. More CSX freight trains seen as route to add passenger rail too

Planners who had been spotlighting transit passenger solutions to Miami-Dade’s road congestion are suddenly shifting their focus to freight, but with the same objective. For years commissioners looked to dormant freight rail lines to carry passenger transit but had no success in dealing with owner CSX rail system. But recent discussions have uncovered a desire by CSX to reactivate the lines for freight that could be coupled with local desires for passenger rail in what would be a win-win deal. Only 1 in 12 Orlando renters who desperately need housing aid get it, study finds

Orlando has the widest gap between people who need housing vouchers and the amount of federal aid that’s available, according to a recent study. For every Section 8 housing voucher Washington provides to metro Orlando, there are 12 “severely cost-burdened” renters, defined as those who pay more than 50% of their income for rent and utilities, according to research released by Zillow this month.
