COVID-19 has brought more students into Florida nursing programs

Nova Southeastern University and Florida Atlantic University are among the Southeast Florida institutions reporting stable or increasing headcount in their nursing programs.

“Some of the applicants are referencing the pandemic and the heroism of frontline nurses as their inspiration,” says FAU spokeswoman Gisele Galoustian.

Indian River assistant nursing dean Patty Gagliano says her college’s program is full for the fall. Broward College saw an increase in applications and reported its nursing headcount rose to 1,269, up from 1,089 in fall 2019, though 90 of those students were still in the program because their graduations were delayed by the closure of hospital clinical studies.
