Orlando Health, Advent Health step up investments in orthopedics

With a projected surge in joint replacements and other orthopedic surgeries among aging Baby Boomers over the next decade, Orlando’s two biggest hospital systems are making big investments in orthopedic facilities.

Orlando Health, which acquired Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic at the end of 2019, is building a seven-story hospital/ambulatory surgery center and medical office building on its downtown campus. The $250-million Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Hospital will have up to 75 beds and 22 operating rooms — including 12 outpatient surgical suites. In recent years, doctors have been performing total knee replacements and hip replacements more often on a “same-day” or “rapid-recovery” basis for patients who qualify.

AdventHealth, meanwhile, recently teamed up with the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute. Headquartered in Philadelphia, Rothman Orthopaedics has nearly 40 offices in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York, and its physicians provide care for the Philadelphia Eagles, Phillies, 76ers and a number of college and high school teams. AdventHealth is building a 12-story, 300,000-sq.-ft. facility off I-4 near downtown Orlando to house the orthopedic institute, where it will provide surgery, imaging, rehab and other related services.
